Built for everyone.
How we make Start the Bag work for every teenager, and how to tell us when it doesn't.
Statement prepared: 23 October 2026
Start the Bag should work for every teenager, including people who are blind or have low vision, are dyslexic, use a keyboard or switch instead of a mouse, or use a screen reader. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What we've built in
- A font designed for readability: body text uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, created by the Braille Institute so that easily confused letters are easier to tell apart.
- Keyboard friendly: every link, button, filter and tool works with the keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline.
- Readable contrast in both light and dark mode, which follows your device setting.
- Zoom and phones: pages reflow to a single column at narrow widths and high zoom, with no sideways scrolling.
- Reduced motion: animations switch off if you've asked your device to reduce motion.
- Structure: proper headings, labeled form fields, and text alternatives for logos and charts.
- No time limits, pop-ups or auto-playing sound or video.
- Plain language: we write short sentences and explain business words when we use them.
Known limitations
- Some charts (like the startup-cost chart in the Hustle Finder) are visual. The same information is available as text in the hustle cards and detail views.
- The flip-card deck on the Big Thinkers page and a few interactive tools are newer and haven't yet been fully tested with every screen reader.
- Some sites we link to may not be accessible. We don't control them.
We're working to fix these, and we test new features with the keyboard and a screen reader before release.
Tell us about a problem
If anything on the site is hard to use, or you need information in a different format, email hello@startthebag.com with the page and what happened. We'll reply within 5 working days and fix what we can.
If you're in the UK and not happy with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
How we tested
This statement is based on our own review of the site in October 2026, using keyboard-only navigation, browser zoom, light and dark modes and phone-width layouts, plus automated testing of every page with axe-core against WCAG 2.2 A and AA rules, which found no violations. We'll review it at least once a year and whenever we make big changes.
